Building with AI

This is our moment: How AI unlocks entrepreneurship for moms

AI is creating unprecedented opportunities for moms to build businesses that fit their lives. Here's how the barriers to entrepreneurship are falling—and why now is the perfect time to start.

People always say to me, "Wow, you have a startup and a baby? That must be insane."

Honestly? The truth is the opposite.

Yes, I work long hours. And yes, entrepreneurship comes with tons of ambiguity, plenty of financial pressure, and way more uncertainty than I'd ideally choose. But here's what people don't realize:

  1. I love my work. Most days, it genuinely doesn't feel like work. The post-bedtime shift? That's often my favorite part of the work day. My husband and I sit side-by-side on the couch, trash TV humming in the background, and we both just get shit done. It's strangely peaceful and deeply satisfying.
  2. I have agency. This might be the biggest thing. I control my schedule, my travel, my location—everything. I work from home, see my kid during lunch and coffee breaks, take calls on dog walks, and shift my deep work towards afternoons/evenings when I'm most productive. That flexibility and control over my life make me better at both work and motherhood.
  3. I'm showing my daughter I'm brave. One of my personal values (and one of our family values) is risk-taking. I believe deeply that better outcomes come when we take more risks. It's important to me that my daughter sees this, and I hope this career path helps her to.

Now, why am I telling you this?

I believe we're entering a moment, powered by AI, where this kind of career agency and fulfillment becomes accessible to more moms than ever before.

In the past two decades, we've seen online marketplaces like Etsy unlock millions of micro-businesses. Social platforms like Instagram and TikTok empowered influencers (including moms who now make a living sharing their lives). AI is the next massive shift, and it will be bigger than the ones before because it dramatically reduces the costs, complexity, and risk of being an entrepreneur.

For moms, the barriers to launching our own ventures have been steep: limited time, high startup costs, lack of technical expertise, and big opportunity costs. AI knocks down these barriers. According to a McKinsey report, AI could automate up to 60% of everyday tasks, freeing us to do more meaningful, strategic, and creative work.

How AI Is Already Changing the Game

I use AI to build my own AI-native startup, Lumi, and multiple micro-projects with zero technical training. The difference now is speed and ease:

Data backs this up: Shopify found side hustles surged by 40% since AI became widely accessible, and women-owned businesses represent a significant portion of this growth.

Making It Real

I want to make this feel real and doable, so I'm sharing a few starter ideas for AI-powered businesses that would be relatively low-lift, high-fun, and (I think) very doable for a mom with a passion.

Right now, I'm bullish on Last Mile AI: companies that enable more AI creativity/fun by doing the last mile manual part that consumers don't want to do. Like...

Five Steps to Start Your AI-Powered Micro-Business

Have I inspired you yet? Well, let me share how easy it is to get started! Here are 5 things you can do right away:

1) Start dreaming

You need an idea you're genuinely excited about, so you have the will to stick with it long enough to reach profitability (which could be fast!).

Prompt ChatGPT:

"Help me brainstorm ways I could make enough money with a small business to quit my day job. Ask me questions to better understand what I'm good at and motivated to do. Include AI-enabled ideas."

2) Outline your plan

Take a few of your favorite ideas and use ChatGPT to outline what the first few months would look like. This helps you understand the reality of what it takes and what excites or scares you:

"Create a 90-day plan for how I could get started with [one idea]."

3) Understand the money

Use ChatGPT to make a financial plan for your idea. Have it research market pricing, competitors, benchmarks, and estimate your costs. Find out how many customers/products you'd need to break even and potential timelines:

"Research pricing, competitors, and benchmarks for [your idea]. Estimate costs, how many customers/products I'd need to sell, and potential timeline to profitability."

4) Let AI do the work

Now that you have a plan, ask ChatGPT (GPT o3 is best):

"Which of these tasks can you do for me? For tasks you can't do, explain how I can do them with affordable AI tools quickly."

Example: My favorite AI-powered website builder is Lovable. I'd say to ChatGPT: "I want to run with the xyz idea. I'm going to build the website in Lovable. Create plain English instructions I can paste into the Lovable prompt box to generate the website." Then literally just copy-paste into Lovable (it's free to start) and watch the website come to life.

5) Start marketing immediately

Use AI to create a marketing plan and content quickly and cheaply. It helps test demand, build awareness, and gain momentum at zero cost:

"Create a simple marketing plan and five pieces of content to test demand for my business. Tell me where to post them and when to generate the most views."

Now's Your Moment

AI has lowered the bar dramatically—less financial risk, less complexity, less overwhelm. Most importantly, more room for creativity, joy, and freedom.

You don't have to risk it all or quit your job immediately. You just have to start playing. The rewards—financial, emotional, professional—can be game-changing. As a mom, it's not just an opportunity; it feels like the moment we've been waiting for.

Ping me with your ideas, tell me how I can help—I'm here to make this real for more moms.

Let's make it ours.
